Public Profile

Distinguished and Famous people from Snowy Mountains

⛷️ Charles Anton

Charles Anton helped transform Australian skiing from a demanding mountain excursion into an organised leisure industry. After supporting alpine huts and a rope tow, he explored the Thredbo valley with Thyne Reid and Tony Sponar in 1956. A development company followed, with Anton as a director, and Thredbo rapidly acquired accommodation and lifts. He also promoted racing, overseas competition and the recruitment of Austrian instructors. His enthusiasm survived setbacks, including an avalanche that destroyed Kunama hut in 1956. The later Kareela lodge at Thredbo became the setting for his 1960 wedding, an unusually personal chapter in a career devoted to getting more people into the mountains.

🏔️ Stuart Diver

Stuart Diver became nationally known after surviving the 1997 Thredbo landslide. Rescuers freed him after about 65 hours beneath the rubble, in freezing conditions. Eighteen people died, including his wife, making this a story of profound loss as well as survival. His connection with Thredbo continued long after the news cameras left. He later became the resort's general manager, a role documented in its 2024–25 sustainability report. That continued working life matters: Diver's place in the Snowy Mountains is not confined to the disaster for which he is most widely recognised, but includes a lasting role in the alpine community and its tourism industry.

⚙️ William Hudson

William Hudson led the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme for eighteen years, bringing experience from engineering work in New Zealand, Australia and Scotland. Dams and tunnels were only part of the challenge. The project needed skilled workers, and Hudson travelled to European refugee camps to recruit people displaced by the Second World War. He encouraged English learning, cooperation and practical invention among a workforce drawn from many countries. Living and working conditions could be demanding and dangerous. His leadership belongs to the region through the construction project itself, where an immense engineering undertaking also became a meeting place for people making new lives.
